Multiple issues may be the reason for a ball screw breaking down. For example, a tiny speck can be pushed into the ball screw mechanism and, it can cause it to move less freely or to jam. If this happens ball screw repair is possible. However continuous use of the ball screw apparatus may also result in operational difficulties. If this is the situation, in general ball screw repair may not be as straightforward.
If you operate an apparatus that contains devices such as these, it will be clear to you that ball screw repair is required when you detect a decrease in output precision. Effects such as these are signs of rough running, a result of repeated use of the ball screw over a long period of time. Wear and tear is caused by the ball bearings scraping against the interior of the shaft. Over a period of use the surfaces of the ball bearings will wear away the shaft’s interior grooves, and this will cause the ball bearings to follow a less precise path. Of course applying lubrication will lessen the friction that is due to the movement within the ball nut, as well as helping to seal the components against dirt and dust thus staving off the need for ball screw repair for a longer period of time.
When using lubrication however you should be careful you don’t overuse it. While the machine is functioning, the oil or other lubricant can be pushed into the barrel causing the tube to split under the extreme pressure. It must also be remembered that ball screw repair can be needed if the machine itself begins to deteriorate with age. Various shields and covers become less effective as they age, leaving apertures that allow specks of dirt to reach the ball screw.
Potentially the ball screw components themselves can break, especially if something goes wrong with the larger mechanism. The technical term for this is machine crash and results in a sudden increase in energy being transmitted to the ball screw in the space of a millisecond. This in turn can push the ball screw shaft to bend or break. Alternatively it may split the balls in the barrel or twist the cylinder of the ball nut. If something like this happens the ball screw will occasionally continue working for a short space of time after the crash, and subsequently it might cease to operate correctly and ball screw repair will be necessitated.
Mild scrapings on a ball screw more often than not can be fixed, as the ball screw can be refurbished. Parts of the screw may be changed, but ball screw repair is sometimes complex.
